Maybe I’m getting older and starting to look beyond the mindset that told me running with scissors was Ok. Maybe it’s the fact that I have teen daughters and I’m thinking about their future. Maybe it’s just the fact that games, for lack of new content ideas, are starting to glamorize the wrong elements of our society without presenting consequences for actions.

No, I’m not the voice of the moral minority, but I do think there is a moral obligation on the parts of developers to present illicit behavior for what it is, and not try to make it glamorous and desirable.

Great article.  I do agree with you on most of the article.  But I would like to add that these are still just games.  We play these games to be entertained and to get away from our day to day life, at least for a few minutes.  Now I'm not saying that we should let little kids play GTA just because its a game.  Instead we as parents need to be more involved with what our kids play.  Also it all comes down to choice.  If we don't like the subject matter in the game, we have the best gameplay option in the world....we can turn it off.

I'm with you aceinet. As a faceless conglomerate of corporations, trying to make the video game industry wear a label of morality and ethics seems like an exercise in futility (almost like trying to define the "lap" as a body part). Movies and books have been glamourising and demonising drugs and violence for years now, but no one has tried to call them to task for being irresponsible (at least not in a good long while). We all need to take a step back and realise that the problem is a lot more close to home than any of us would care to think, and parents need to make the ultimate call on what is appropriate for their kids. Anyway, that's just my thoughts on it  Wink

Parents can only supervise their kids just so much. Maybe up to the age of 11 but kids go to friends houses, kids buy games online or at garage sales.  Parents can't be with their teens at all times and is ridiculous to think they can be.  So in my opinion publishers should take some responsibility in the content of games since to late - the industry has gotten out of control with more violence, sex, profanity, etc.
